The medium of film has emerged from the spirit of the modern era and has influenced the twentieth century as no other form of expression. Contemporary art which again increasingly deals with the modern era, almost naturally lands up at film and its history. The exhibition project takes this phenomenon into account: six artists have been invited to curate programs including historical and current, their own as well as other films.

Florian Pumhösl, Josef Dabernig, Lotte Schreiber, Marko Lulic, Florian Wüst, and Hannes Böck – all acting within the field of film and fine arts – present their subjective view of the modern era in film. Classics by Sergej Eisenstein, Hans Richter, Maya Deren, Georges Franju, or Zelimir Zilnik are shown in a line with ‘secret master pieces’ and contemporary works (e.g. by Peter Weiss, Öyvind Fahlström, Jack Goldstein, Deimantas Narkevicius, Hy Hirsh, or the Whitney brothers). A lot of these films are presented for the first time in Austria; Josef Dabernig’s new work Lancia Thema and Hannes Böck’s ddr have their world premiere.

The purchase of one ‘Re: MODERN’ ticket at the Film Museum or Künstlerhaus also entitles to a single entrance at the co-operation partners of the ‘Re: MODERN’ project.
